How do you get on a UK Apprenticeship?

I understand what an apprenticeship is but not how you get on one… Do you apply through a college who then arrange apprenticeships with employers or do you apply to employers who then arrange the vocational qualifications with colleges?? Basically I’m 28 years old, I’m being made redundant for the umpteenth time and I’ve been seriously thinking of getting skilled in a trade instead of entering yet another boring office job.
